Installing Your Hard Drives

Installing Your Hard Drives

Installing the hard drives in our Sonata is as easy as lining the drive caddy up with its bay and gently sliding it into place. Keep in mind when you’re placing your hard drives that a modern 10,000rpm drive can get up to 140 F if it isn’t properly cooled. Running a drive at a high temperature wont’ really affect performance, but it will greatly decrease the lifespan of the drive. Keeping your drives cool shouldn’t require any extra hardware all you really need to do is leave a space between them.

In our Sonata case, installing the drive is as easy lining it up with its slot and gently lowering it into place. Make sure you leave room for air to flow between drives!

Once the drives are mounted to your system, you need to run the data cables to your motherboard. We usually try to use the case chassis to help route the cables. You can slide them through gaps in the case and then secure them with zip or twist ties.

Connect your Serial ATA cables to your drives. Without a data cable, even the fastest hard drive is nothing more than an expensive heater.

A warning for Serial ATA users: Be extremely careful when you apply any vertical force to the Serial ATA connector on the back of your hard drives. We’ve already heard a few reports from users who broke connectors off the drive, which rendered the entire drive useless. It might be a good idea to remove the Serial ATA cables from the drives while you route the cables and then replace them once everything is in place.
Once your cables are plugged in, gently run them through the case. Be extremely careful! It’s easy to break the Serial ATA connector off of the drive, which renders the drive useless.
